Assessment and Referral
HOW IT WORKS?
When you first make contact, I will welcome you and listen, then asses.
I aim to look at the child or young person and the family as a whole to gain insight into what they are trying to tell us by presenting behaviours that we tend to see as “problem”. I then think about what can help and how this particular approach can be beneficial or not.
The next step may be a referral to another practitioner. It has been said a small positive act can change the world.
I tend to work according to the steps outlined below.
- Step 1. A child or young person is referred to me by parents, school or by an agency.
- Step 2. Initial contact with the referrer to get a greater understanding into this child or young person’s world and who may have an impact on the work that will be conducted.
- Step 3. In order to decide what type of therapy will be beneficial on this instance, I meet with the parents, support workers, or whoever is involved, for example a social worker.
- Step 4. If we are happy then the therapeutic work will be conducted, I will send the contract to the adult to explain safeguarding, confidentiality, risk and child protection. We also agree the frequency of the review meetings.
- Step 5. Therapeutic works starts.
- Step 6. Review meeting with adults involved. We talk about how the therapeutic work is going and whether there are themes emerging within the work. I will not disclose the content of our sessions unless I was asked by the child or young person.
- Step 7. If the decision is made to end the therapy, I will prepare the child or young person for ending.
- Step 8. Ending.
